Things That Make Me Happy No.1

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Number 6 of my 101 list is to identify 100 things that make me happy. I can say, without any doubt in my mind, that one of these things that make me happy are my friends. Without my friends my life would be a lot less interesting, enjoyable, fulfilled or complete.

They have been there with me, on nights out where people may have done things that they probably shouldn’t have. They have been there with me on holidays. They have been there with me on my first gig. They have been there with me at many parties, events and non-events, and my friends have been there for me, more recently upon the death of my grandmother.

Life without friends is like John without Edward, Abby without Lisa, Galway without traffic, Lasagane without meat. They just don’t work. I hold my friends close and dear.

101 in 1001

Friday, October 29th, 2010

People tend to go through life by trying to achieving goals that they may have set out, but sometimes this is harder than they originally thought. Anything that makes achieving a goal easier is a good thing by me, and 101 in 1001 from the day zero project is just that.

I recently joined the day zero project as I felt that there were things in my life that I would like to do and felt that I was missing out by not doing them sooner than later. So in order to motivate me I joined the day zero project and set up some goals for myself.

The site suggests setting 101 goals in the 1001 days. I intend to set 101, but at the moment as a starter I have only added 10, these 10 are:

1. Donate blood.

Always wanted to donate blood. So here is my chance. Someone somewhere might need me someday and I wouldn’t even know it.

2. Random acts of kindness.

Bring a bit of happiness and joy into someone elses life when they are down.

3. Get fit.

Same goal for a lot of people. Loose weight, tone up, live a better, healthier life. Adopt a healthier diet and treat my body with the care and respect it deserves.

4. Bake bread.

Yes, I know, gay!! I have to learn to bake something!!

5. Bake an apple pie.

The way I look at it, if the bread goes well, it’s time to up my game.

6. Identify 100 things that make me happy.

100 things that make me happy may sound like a lot but it’s only 1 thing every 10 days throughout the challenge. Happiness is very important in life. Identifing things that make you happier are important.

7. Loans.

Straight forward one here. Clear all my loans and debt in the 1001 days. I don’t see this being a problem, as long as I don’t borrow anymore money or do any unesscary shopping.

8. Become vegatarian for a week.

I have tried this before in the past and with great results, but at the time I allowed myself to eat meat two days during it. This time I want to do it for the whole week, and maybe longer.

9. Learn a computer language and be able to confidently code with it.

I have always been interested in computer programming languages and have a small knowledge of a few different languages, but not a complete understanding of one full language so that I could code with it without any issues. It’s time to sort this.

10. Learn and speak a new language.

I have always wanted to speak a new language, so this was an obvious one to add to the list. I have recently started learning Spanish in college so this will go along way with achieving this goal.

So there are the intital 10. Will be adding more as I decide which I want to add to them. I will also give updates on my progress through them. If you want to vsit my profile page on the day zero project click here or the link on the side bar to the right.

“So when is the big day Mike?” you might ask. July 26, 2013. The countdown has begun.

College Exams

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I’ve been lucky this summer with the exams. I had only one to sit. That is only due to doing the course part time. The full time students in my year have had to do 3. Last year there where 5 or 6 exams for the full time students while I had only 3. The course was changed this year to a lot of continious assessments. This was a good thing for obvious reasons, doing small exams through out the year and handing up projects as we went along. It meant no extra study for summer exams.

Now that I have finished college for the summer, I’ll get the chance to complete my home study course for PC repair and upgrade. It’s an easy course. I just need the piece of paper that says I can do these things. So bring it on. Also now that I don’t have to attend classes during the day it leaves me a lot more time for myself during the day before going to work. Plans, finish home study course, reading some of my many unread books and getting out and enjoying the weather by plenty of walking.

Planning to go back to London at the end of this month, volcanic ash cloud permitting. Loved London when I was there back in January. Chelsea flower show is on during the dates that I plan to be there, so I’ll get myself a ticket and pop along to see what all of the fuss is about.

The New Year Post.

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Unsure if I should make this a review of 2009 or an objective post to which I can look back at come the next new year and see if I have achieved any of the goals that I set out in this post. A review would involve remembering stuff and deciding if I should include that. I think that it may be best to make an attempt to look to the future and see where I want to go, what I want to do and how I’m going to achieve them.

The first goal would be, as most people at this time of year, weight loss.

I want to loose at least 3 stone in this year alone. That’s only 1 stone per quarter, which is only 4lbs per month and that is not a lot. With regular exercise and being careful with what I eat, weight loss shouldn’t be a problem. The only obstacle I see here is my schedule during the week. With college during the day and work in the evenings, it can be hard to find time to make a meal. I will have to start bringing packed lunches.

The next goal would be to clear as much of my debts as possible.

My biggest debt would be my car. Not only do I have the costs of keeping it on the road, petrol, tax, insurance, maintenance but I also have the monthly repayments for it. The repayments will be complete in September of 2011. Clearing this would be a big weight off my back.

Weight loss and clearing debt are the biggest goals for 2010 but not the only goals. Some of the smaller goals that I want to set for myself are learning PHP and MySQL, getting back into playing the piano, putting an ad in the papers for PC repair.

Those are my main targets for the year. I may come back to this post frequently and add some more goals to it as I remember them or think of them.

So for now I will wish you all the best for 2010 and hope that it brings you all that you hope it does.
