The White Screen of Death

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

I am in mourning. I am almost depressed, for my beloved iTouch has suffered the white screen of death!! Yes there are fixes out there, the hold the power and home buttons or for some people you need to hold the volume up button too. The restore it to factory settings route.

I have scoured the Internet for a solution. I was delight when it worked the first time, but alas, ’tis no more. My iTouch seems to be of no more use to me, just a white screen, a glorified torch!!

So for my next MP3 player, what should I choice? Sometimes in life you are faced with some really hard choices!!

Things That Make Me Happy No.1

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Number 6 of my 101 list is to identify 100 things that make me happy. I can say, without any doubt in my mind, that one of these things that make me happy are my friends. Without my friends my life would be a lot less interesting, enjoyable, fulfilled or complete.

They have been there with me, on nights out where people may have done things that they probably shouldn’t have. They have been there with me on holidays. They have been there with me on my first gig. They have been there with me at many parties, events and non-events, and my friends have been there for me, more recently upon the death of my grandmother.

Life without friends is like John without Edward, Abby without Lisa, Galway without traffic, Lasagane without meat. They just don’t work. I hold my friends close and dear.

101 in 1001

Friday, October 29th, 2010

People tend to go through life by trying to achieving goals that they may have set out, but sometimes this is harder than they originally thought. Anything that makes achieving a goal easier is a good thing by me, and 101 in 1001 from the day zero project is just that.

I recently joined the day zero project as I felt that there were things in my life that I would like to do and felt that I was missing out by not doing them sooner than later. So in order to motivate me I joined the day zero project and set up some goals for myself.

The site suggests setting 101 goals in the 1001 days. I intend to set 101, but at the moment as a starter I have only added 10, these 10 are:

1. Donate blood.

Always wanted to donate blood. So here is my chance. Someone somewhere might need me someday and I wouldn’t even know it.

2. Random acts of kindness.

Bring a bit of happiness and joy into someone elses life when they are down.

3. Get fit.

Same goal for a lot of people. Loose weight, tone up, live a better, healthier life. Adopt a healthier diet and treat my body with the care and respect it deserves.

4. Bake bread.

Yes, I know, gay!! I have to learn to bake something!!

5. Bake an apple pie.

The way I look at it, if the bread goes well, it’s time to up my game.

6. Identify 100 things that make me happy.

100 things that make me happy may sound like a lot but it’s only 1 thing every 10 days throughout the challenge. Happiness is very important in life. Identifing things that make you happier are important.

7. Loans.

Straight forward one here. Clear all my loans and debt in the 1001 days. I don’t see this being a problem, as long as I don’t borrow anymore money or do any unesscary shopping.

8. Become vegatarian for a week.

I have tried this before in the past and with great results, but at the time I allowed myself to eat meat two days during it. This time I want to do it for the whole week, and maybe longer.

9. Learn a computer language and be able to confidently code with it.

I have always been interested in computer programming languages and have a small knowledge of a few different languages, but not a complete understanding of one full language so that I could code with it without any issues. It’s time to sort this.

10. Learn and speak a new language.

I have always wanted to speak a new language, so this was an obvious one to add to the list. I have recently started learning Spanish in college so this will go along way with achieving this goal.

So there are the intital 10. Will be adding more as I decide which I want to add to them. I will also give updates on my progress through them. If you want to vsit my profile page on the day zero project click here or the link on the side bar to the right.

“So when is the big day Mike?” you might ask. July 26, 2013. The countdown has begun.

Hacker inside
Image via Wikipedia

Over the past while I have been watching a group in Galway that interests me very much and only for prior commitments I would be there a long time ago and a lot more often. Yesterday evening, Friday, I had my first chance to go to 091Labs.

091Labs is Galways very own hacker space. Where people can meet up for a multitude of reasons, such as arts, computers, meeting friends, having a chat and a  number of interesting events in the evenings, such as the one I went to yesterday, PHP programming workshops.

They also do workshops on android, have done one on Linux, processing and more. If i didn’t work evenings I’d be there for them all. Yesterday was the Introduction to PHP workshop. Once we got over a few teething problems with getting laptops setup, Barry gave an interesting overview of what PHP can do and where it can be used. I fully intend on returning there again next Friday evening.

For more info on 091Labs click here or the link in the sidebar.

Goodbye and thanks for the ride.

It looks like my time being a resident in the Elms on Forster st is coming to an end. Due to “contractual difficulties” I need to find a new place to live. I have seen a few nice places and have collected a lot of numbers to ring around. The big search begins tomorrow.

It is two years since I moved into the elms. In the two years that apartment has been a good home to me. Moving out of home was one of the best things I ever did. Not that living at home was a bad thing, but since moving out i have met so many new people and made so many new friends, which I would not have made if I had stayed at home. It was past time I moved out of home at that stage anyway.

I’m hoping to get somewhere near the city centre still or only a 15 to 20 minute walk away. I am not quite ready to retire to the suburbs just yet. I’ll think about that when I reach 30.

So, it’s back to daft.ie I go and continue on my way to a new home.

New Blog Theme

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Just installed a new blog theme called Just Kite it. It’s nice an bright compared to the old one, which I did like but got fed up of looking at, plus it got hacked so it was an excuse to look for a new one and install it.

It makes the blog look brighter and its how I like to see life. Nice, light, easy, even though at times it may not seem like it, but life is as it is. More updates coming to the blog soon, so keep an eye out and let me know what you think of it.

Leave a comment and tell me if you like the new theme, what you do or don’t like about it. All comments welcome.

It’s Been A Month!!

Friday, June 25th, 2010

It’s been a month since I last posted to the blog. The month has been quite busy and eventful. I’ve travelled, been to a few events met new friends and it even saw another birthday come to pass.

I last posted on the 25th of May. Two days later I was in Dublin and then spent the night in Maynooth with Wayne and Stephen. Just had a nice relaxing day in Dublin for myself. Nothing too stressful. That evening Wayne, Stephen and I all had a few cans at theirs, nothing too hectic as we all had to be up the following morning. I had to catch a flight to London the following day and try to get through the morning rush hour traffic on the M50.

I was in London for the next three days, as was David. Met up with him in the evenings and we went for a few drinks. We where at the famous Chelsea Flower show on the Friday. It was massive. Lots of nice gardens. This was more Davids thing than mine. I enjoyed it and spent a good bit of time relaxing around the band stand listening to the music. Once I came back to Ireland I spent another night with Wayne before heading back to Galway.

The following weekend saw the June bank holiday and also Dignity Wests official opening weekend. The cheeky girls, yes the real cheeky girls, where there on the Friday night and a Lady Gaga tribute group on the Sunday night.

Last weekend saw another birthday come and go. Was out Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Sunday was Davids birthday. We had dinner in a spanish restaurant on Domnick street called Cava. It was a really nice place. The music was good, but the food was not really to my taste. I’m am a very plain eater so when I go to restaurants like this I always try to keep an open mind. If I was into that kind of food, I’m sure I would have liked it.

I survived the redundacies in work. Romours of more to come, but as of yet, they are just romours and nothing more. This weekend sees the company BBQ in the Radisson. Free food, possibly a few drinks too, hopefully, but one thing that is sure, it will be great craic.

I’m still looking for a plugin for the blog to create a gallery page with photos from London. Until then, au revoir France!!!

London Again

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Heading to London again this week. I have two weeks of work so in the morning I am heading to Dublin for the day. Will be doing a bit of relaxation and retail therapy before heading to Maynooth for the night where I will see a friend and have a few drinks.

Then it’s off to Dublin airport in the morning to catch my flight to London where I will be staying for three nights. Will be relaxing and discovering the place on Thursday, catching the Chelsea flower show on Friday with a friend and doing a bit of shopping and site seeing on Saturday before heading home on Sunday.

Just looking forward to the few days relaxation and rest from norm. I know I still have to post some photos from my previous visit to London back in January. I am looking for a suitable plug-in that will allow me to create galleries for people to come look at.

Will post again soon.

College Exams

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I’ve been lucky this summer with the exams. I had only one to sit. That is only due to doing the course part time. The full time students in my year have had to do 3. Last year there where 5 or 6 exams for the full time students while I had only 3. The course was changed this year to a lot of continious assessments. This was a good thing for obvious reasons, doing small exams through out the year and handing up projects as we went along. It meant no extra study for summer exams.

Now that I have finished college for the summer, I’ll get the chance to complete my home study course for PC repair and upgrade. It’s an easy course. I just need the piece of paper that says I can do these things. So bring it on. Also now that I don’t have to attend classes during the day it leaves me a lot more time for myself during the day before going to work. Plans, finish home study course, reading some of my many unread books and getting out and enjoying the weather by plenty of walking.

Planning to go back to London at the end of this month, volcanic ash cloud permitting. Loved London when I was there back in January. Chelsea flower show is on during the dates that I plan to be there, so I’ll get myself a ticket and pop along to see what all of the fuss is about.

Another Wee Update

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Again it has been a while since my last post. So I should really have a few things to say, and I do. It’s the Friday of the May bank holiday weekend so it means a few days off, a few days to relax and few days to also get things done. Took last night off work, just so that the weekend would be that bit longer. Went to the cinema to see Dear John, Dear God!! Don’t bother people!! Go for a pint, because that will be what you’ll need after it. This film has no plot, no real story line. They fall in love, he goes to war, they write letters and…well that’s it,they write letters. Although going in I made the mistake of asking for Iron Man 2 tickets but went in anyway. I think it was my subconscious telling me that I should go to Iron Man 2!!

Off to Dublin tomorrow for the night. Gonna head up early meet my cousin and shop for the day, find somewhere to stay and then head out for the night. If I don’t find somewhere to stay I’ll just get the bus back to Galway after the night club. I love going out in Dublin. I think it is due to the fact that it is somewhere different, also the scene is a lot different and much better than the one here in Galway.

Had an exam yesterday. Not good, but I was expecting that. It’s one of those subjects that is just almost impossible to understand. I’m not alone on this one. I have asked other classmates and they are all in the same boat. None of us like the subject or the teaching method use, rather than the lecturer. I have a project and a report due in on Tuesday morning. Almost done with it now, then it is just one more exam after that and I am free of college until September.

Well that is all the update that I have for the moment. I would like to post more frequently but never really get the chance to, maybe with the summer coming and college finished until September I may get to posting more often.
